This weekend was dinner from South Africa. We had some items suggested by some dear friends who also brought us some Mrs Balls peach chutney, one of our favourites that we’ve not seen in ages!
Dinner was Bobotie over rice (quinoa for me) and, though once again a seemingly odd mash of ingredients and flavours, quite tasty. Starting with onions and beef, you add apricot jam, raisins, peach chutney, milk soaked bread, and curry. After cooking it in the oven an hour, you pour the remainder of the milk mixed with an egg and bake until brown. We really enjoyed the taste, though I would increase the curry, jam, and chutney, and the kids would like to go without the raisins.
This recipe was simple to make and we were able to source all the ingredients easily. Though our chutney had no spice, you could use hot, which is actually what the recipe called for.

Dessert was melkterts which I’m sure will be made time and time again. They remind me of the egg tarts my sister in laws mom makes and were so tasty! Made with boiled milk, eggs, butter, sugar, flour, and topped with cinnamon sugar, then cooled. The kids could barely wait until they were set!
Did you know that South Africa is home to the largest land animal (elephant), bird (ostrich), reptile (leather back turtle), antelope (eland), as well as the smallest mammal (least dwarf shrew)? Their water is rated 3rd in the world for being safe and ready to drink. They are the only country in the world that has voluntarily abandoned its nuclear weapons programme, and they have the second largest film industry in the world. South Africa produces 2/3 of Africa’s electricity and is one of the largest producers of meat in Africa.
